Replacing Machine Tool Wipers: Why & When

First let’s talk about the purpose of the wiper on our machine tools. The wiper and scraper are in place to keep any chips, large or small, from entering between the machine casting and slide, protect axis linear rails, and also keep chips and coolant inside the work envelope.

DON’T FORGET THE SCRAPER

In some cases, Okuma uses a wiper protector or scraper to protect the wiper itself against the daily wear from turning or drilling materials. It is not only important to check the wiper and its condition, but also check the scraper to ensure proper protection of the wipers.

CONSIDER YOUR RUN SCHEDULE

The Operations and Maintenance Manual for your machine tool outlines an annual replacement, but please understand this is based on running 8 hours a day 5 days a week. If you’re running your machine lights out, you’ll need to replace the wipers much more frequently. The Okuma PM Kits are also based on a workday of 8 hours a day 5 days a week. Please review your machine’s run schedule and adjust replacement of the wipers and scrapers accordingly.
