Okuma’s DS1 – Factory of the Future
02.18.2014
Okuma Corporation’s new DS1 (Dream Site 1) manufacturing facility in Oguchi, Japan began operation at the World Headquarters Plant in 2013, producing multitasking machines, medium-sized and large CNC lathes--both horizontal and vertical. The new facility transforms operations into a “Smart Factory” manufacturing environment, where an increased range of Okuma’s CNC machine products are produced efficiently and in short run production. This enables shorter delivery times, reduced costs, and enhanced market competitiveness. Watch this video to see the new DS1 come to life.
Key DS1 Accomplishments
- Productivity is doubled
- Manufacturing lead-time cut in half
- FMS and robots operate 24/7
- Self-contained start-to-finish “Smart Factory”, from raw materials input to shipment out the door
- Built for environmental efficiency ¬ features such as solar panels and natural lighting reduce costs by 30%, also reducing the environmental burden
The efficiency improvements are a result of investment in a new manufacturing management system and a greater emphasis on automation, robotics and unmanned operations.
More than a century of technology in the making, the DS1 is the factory of the future.
