The Machine Tool Oscars

This Sunday, America celebrates our love of movies as we watch the Academy Awards ceremony honoring the year’s most popular films. This reminds us of how popular videos have become in the machine tool industry, too. Based on the growing numbers of views on Okuma America’s YouTube channel, it sure seems like Cutting Demos are all the rage. Here are our most popular flicks (ranked by highest number of views) and the “Oscar categories” we envision them winning.

BEST PICTURE

Okuma’s 5-Axis Vertical Machining Center, MU-500VA

People keep flocking to this popular video, which gets thousands of new views each week. Okuma’s MU-V Series delivers the power of process-intensive machining and high-speed, high-accuracy cutting…all definitely on display. Don’t miss the “shining stars” in the parts shown here.

BEST USE OF TURNING AND MILLING IN ONE SETUP

Okuma Turn-Cut on MA-600HB

In this video an Okuma MA-600HB horizontal machining center demonstrates our unique Turn-Cut functionality. By turning and milling in one set-up, on one machine, users can save time and money.

BEST TOOLS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE

LB-EX MYW With Optional Hobbing

This video includes a demonstration of how you can use an Okuma CNC lathe instead of a dedicated hobbing machine to complete gears in one setup. Here the LB-3000EX is outfitted with tooling from Sandvik and WTO (members of Partners in THINC), providing an incredibly versatile lathe with multi-function capabilities.

BEST THREADING DEMO FOR OIL AND ENERGY

LU-300 Cam – Rope Threading

Here’s a demonstration showing a thread that’s used in the oil and energy industry. The Okuma LU300 V1CAM machine produces a very strong thread that’s easy to clean in its particular environment.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY A LARGE PART

MULTUS B750 Cutting Demo

The largest in the family of MULTUS horizontal lathes, the B750 has a maximum turning diameter in excess of 1 meter (41.34 inches, 1,050 mm) that enhances productivity for large parts. The large demo part shown here gives a nuanced performance as several operations and tool changes are simulated around it.

BEST CAMEO ROLE BY A DIRECTOR OF MARKETING

GENOS L300

People still love watching this GENOS L300-M demo from IMTS 2010. It gives us a great view of Okuma’s Mid Turret Index function, which allows users to put as many as 18 tools on a 12-station turret. At the end, you’ll also see the transfer of a part from the main spindle to the sub spindle. And don’t miss the surprise cameo role played by Julie Murphy (Okuma America’s Director of Marketing) at 2:46.

BEST SHORT FILM

Okuma Corporate Introduction Video

While there are many ways to communicate Okuma’s strengths, “every number tells a story” and that’s what we’ve done in Okuma’s corporate video. Check out the video to see some of the impressive facts, figures, and the people who make them happen behind the scenes.

BEST TIME-LAPSE VIDEO

Double Column Machining Center MCR-A5C Installation Time-Lapse Video

This MCR-A5C double column machining center was installed at Okuma America Corporation headquarters in Charlotte, North Carolina. Check out this time-lapse video to see everything that goes into getting one of these huge CNC machines up and running.

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY

MB-4000H Horizontal Machining Center – High Speed Machining
This video uses stunning shots that get you right inside the machine for a close-up view of high-speed machining roughing a mold cavity. P20 steel is cut on an MB-4000H at a feedrate of 11,000mm/min.

BEST HEAVY CUTTING ACTION FLICK

Large Double Column Vertical Turning Lathe With Milling

The VTR-160A double column turning center provides large capacity machining with high rigidity and thermal stability for close tolerances. This video shows how it can take heavy cuts, plus it has a milling function for greater versatility.
