TIP: Let Your Machine Tool Breathe

When servicing a machine tool in a customer’s facility, one of the issues service techs see most often is dirty and clogged air filters on machine components. Your machine needs to breathe to do its job properly! Filters provide reliable protection against the entry of coolant mist, chips, dust and dirt, ensuring stable performance of semiconductors, relays and magnetic switches – but they can only do this when they’re clean. Here are some tips for incorporating filter cleaning into your regular maintenance schedule.

The 3-Month Rule

To increase the reliability of the machine tool, filters on the cooling unit that are mounted on electrical cabinet doors should be inspected every three months. If they’re clogged, clean them. Air should be blowing hard into the electrical cabinet to keep electronic components from overheating.

Additionally, some spindle oil chillers, hydraulic oil chillers and coolant chillers, which help in controlling thermal growth, also use filters. They assist in keeping condenser coils clean, which in turn allows the units to run at optimum levels and keeps the cooler motor’s thermal fuse from tripping. These filters should be inspected every three months also. The correct cleaning of these filters is explained in your machine’s Operation and Maintenance manual.
