Who will win? If events like the Super Bowl and the Olympics are any indication, we’re compulsively attracted to high-stakes contests. Ditto for this coming Sunday when millions of us will engage in televised star-gazing via the Academy Awards. Winning and awards fascinate us. Of course this kind of reaching-for-the-top goes on in our industry as well, although it’s sometimes less celebrated. How many are aware that Okuma has won 42 awards over the years, mostly for technological machine tool innovation? Probably not a lot. So in the spirit of the season, we’d like to spotlight a few awards that Okuma has been honored with in recent years. These folks don’t have paparazzi following them around…but maybe they should!
2015 Awards
10 Best New Products MU-4000V-L

The MU-4000V-L 5-axis vertical machining center with turning function received one of the Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun’s (Business & Technology Daily News) 2015 10 Best New Product Awards. This is Okuma’s twelfth product to receive a 10 Best New Product Award.
EXCELLENCE AWARD, MACHINE DESIGN

ECO suite won the Excellence Award / Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award at Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun’s 45th Machine Design Awards. ECO suite is an advanced energy-saving technology that dramatically cuts power consumption while maintaining high machining accuracy.
2014 AWARDS
10 BEST NEW PRODUCTS – OSP SUITE

OSP Suite received what is referred to as the “Monozukuri Prize” at the Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun’s (Business & Technology Daily News) 2014 10 Best New Product Awards. OSP suite is a next-generation intelligent CNC that provides premium solutions around a core of Intelligent Technologies, suite apps, and suite operation.

MM AWARD (LATHE & MACHINING CENTER CATEGORY) AT AMB 2014

The MU-6300V 5-axis machining center won the MM Award in the lathe & machining center category at AMB 2014. The MM-Awards are given by Maschinen Markt (MM), a highly-respected manufacturing industry journal based in Germany, to outstanding and innovative products and new technologies.
JSPE (JAPAN SOCIETY FOR PRECISION ENGINEERING) PRIZE

Okuma President & CEO, Yoshimaro "Dean" Hanaki,was awarded the 2014 JSPE Prize by the Japanese Society for Precision Engineering. The JSPE Prize is given to researchers and engineers for groundbreaking achievements in research, engineering, and education in the field of precision engineering.
PRIZE FOR SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

Okuma’s R&D Department General Manager Harumitsu Senda and four others received the Prize for Science and Technology in the Development Category, from the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. The award recognized them for “development of intelligent machine tool technology that improves machining efficiency and accuracy.”
2013 AWARDS
JAPANESE SOCIETY OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERS MEDAL (TECHNOLOGY)

Okuma received the Japanese Society of Mechanical Engineers Medal (Technology) for the 5-Axis Auto Tuning System, which corrects geometric error on 5-axis machine tools and maintains their accuracy.
10 BEST NEW PRODUCTS MULTUS U SERIES

Okuma’s MULTUS U Series of intelligent multitasking machines received the Monozukuri Prize at the Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun’s (Business & Technology Daily News) 2013 10 Best New Product Awards. The MULTUS U Series machines are the ultimate multitasking machines. They bring together high accuracy, high rigidity, high functionality, and integrated operations, all in a single machine.
MM AWARD AT EMO 2013

The 5-Axis Auto Tuning System won an MM Award for the software category at EMO 2013.
Jury’s Special Award
The MU-10000H 5-axis horizontal machining center won the Jury’s Special Award at the 43rd Machine Design Awards, sponsored by the Nikkan Kogyo Business & Technology Daily News.
TECHNOLOGY AWARD, JAPANESE SOCIETY OF DIE/MOLD TECHNOLOGY

Technology used in the MP-46V, Okuma’s vertical machining center for high-precision parts and dies/molds, won the Technology Award at the Japanese Society of Die/Mold Technology Awards.
