One of the questions I often hear is "why does the machine have a battery?" Each generation of Okuma machine tool controls exists for different reasons. Most are used for holding software or parameters, but some are used for keeping the date and time or for shutting down the machine. Unlike other machine tools, Okuma doesn’t require a battery for the encoder system. Discover the four battery systems we use in our controls and their functions.

  • Coin Battery – This battery is on the back of the panel PC and is used to hold your BIOS settings just like on any computer. Most notably, it keeps the time and date.
  • UPS battery – Okuma includes this battery to ensure that if power is lost, the control will have power to shut down Windows properly. If you’ve ever unplugged your desktop computer and restarted in safe mode, you’ll understand what happens when a computer is turned off incorrectly and restarted.

  • Battery Pack – While the system software is stored on the flash drive on this control, the parameters are stored in CMOS memory. This type of system has to have a battery to hold memory when the power is off.

  • Battery Pack – These controls all have the same type of CMOS memory holding all the software as well as the parameters for the machine.
