When talking about machining for aerospace the topic of hard metals, specifically titanium, rises to the top. A recent report from research firm Lucintel sites titanium consumption in global aerospace will grow at a compounded annual rate of 3.3 per cent over the next five years. That growth corresponds to the increasing deliveries of commercial aircraft programs that are using more titanium than previous generations. Boeing’s 777 consists of five per cent titanium by weight, while the new 787 Dreamliner consists of f15 per cent. On the military side, Lockheed Martin’s F-35 series are one-third composite by weight.
