Tech Tip: How to Perform Automatic Tool Changer (ATC) Recovery
07.18.2024
An automatic tool changer, or ATC, is an effective addition to any CNC machine tool. As the name implies, an ATC can quickly switch out a variety of tools and enable greater tool storage capacity. Automatic tool changers give your CNC machine and your operators freedom to work more autonomously, increasing productivity and decreasing downtime because the work continues without manual intervention.
Despite the tangible benefits, unexpected interruptions with an automatic tool changer can still arise. Rest assured, there’s a quick way to troubleshoot so the stoppage doesn’t derail your machining processes. Watch the video below to see how to recover your Okuma ATC:
How to Perform Automatic Tool Changer Recovery
- Release e-stop and turn the machine back on
- Go into manual mode and press the “Machine Operation” button (double check that you’re in the ATC part of the operations screen)
- Identify (in the upper left-hand corner) the sequence position the tool changer is/was in when the interruption occurred; determine if you want the sequence to go backward or forward in the sequence steps
- You can press interlock release at the same time you press the 1-step buttons (1-Step Advance to move forward in the sequence or 1-Step Return to go backward), but this is an option and not always required; confirm you are not bypassing an alarm that needs attention in this process
- Continue the process until you return to ATC sequence 1
