crowd around cnc machines at the 2019 Okuma Summer Showcase

By Wade Anderson

After months of preparation it’s almost here Okuma’s Summer Showcase 2019. With 20 machine tools on display, demonstrations showing the latest technologies, and countless years of experience all in one room, this is a unique opportunity to learn what’s possible for your CNC machining. We welcome you to join us at Partners in THINC and Okuma America Headquarters in Charlotte, NC, July 24 and 25. Here’s a preview of some of the highlights of this year’s show.

Full Spectrum of Automation Systems

Any machine tool Okuma builds is designed to be automation-ready. Whether you’re looking for a quick, easy to plug-and-play machine, or full custom systems integration, we have the entire spectrum covered. Whatever your needs, Okuma offers the simplest platform to be able to connect and utilize automation. Several automation systems will be spotlighted at the Showcase, including:

MU-5000V with a FANUC robot. High efficiency and high productivity in 5-axis, multi-sided machining.

MU-S600V with built-in machine-to-machine automation. We’ll show two side-by-side machines that pass the part from one to the next.

MB-5000HII , a completely redesigned machine tool that we debuted at IMTS 2018. This machine is targeted for speed and power.

LB3000 EXII with a gantry loader.

2SP-150 with a twin spindle twin loader gantry system.

Gosiger Load & Go, an affordable robotic machine tending system. This system can be plugged into an Okuma machine and be up and running in about 4 hours.

Unique 5-Axis Demo

We’ll also be showing a unique demo that should be inspiring for folks who are just stepping into 5-axis machining, or plan to in the future. In partnership with ESPRIT, we’ll be machining the body of a Formula 1 concept car out of a 16 x 6.25 x 2.75-inch block of aluminum 6061 on an Okuma GENOS M460V-5AX five-axis machine. Tooling is provided by Kennametal and the fixture holding by SCHUNK. The car’s wheels are machined separately on an Okuma LB3000 EX II, making this one sweet ride with a top speed of 2 mph!

Introducing…the Okuma Tech Bar!

At Okuma we always want to innovate and try something new, with the goal of providing more value to our customers. This year we’ll debut the Okuma Tech Bar, a format designed to provide informative, non-promotional, high-level discussions on specific topics of interest. Each presenter will have a 15-minute time slot and topics will include:

Tooling Advancements for Productivity (Sandvik)

Types of Drive Systems for Rotary Table Applications (Koma Precision)

Increasing Lights-Out Productivity for Turning Applications (Edge Technologies)

Cyclone Filtration: Filter Down to 2 Microns Without the Use of Disposable Media (LNS Filtration)

Getting the Most From 5-Axis (Hypemill & Hexagon)

Aerospace Machining (Kennametal)

Importance of Connected Equipment (LNS)

Highly Productive Driven Broaching on Turning Centers (ISCAR & WTO)

Complex Aerospace Machining with New Technologies (VMH – Siemens NX)

The Most Important Thing

In our industry, most people spend the majority of their time in their own manufacturing environment, and don’t get an opportunity to be exposed to new technologies. The Summer Showcase provides a great opportunity to come and see new things, but most importantly, to talk with people and learn from those who see many different scenarios out in the field. Myself alone, I visit hundreds of machine shops over the course of a year. I have the benefit of observing many things that people could improve on, along with things people are doing extremely well. I have a few insights I can share, and I know you do too. Ditto for the scores of experts from Okuma, our distributors, and Partners in THINC who will also be in attendance. Let’s get together and make our manufacturing processes the best they can be.
