Bridging the Skills Gap: Automated Gaging Simplifies the Measurement Process
10.08.2013
Machine shops across the country, regardless of the industry, are experiencing the struggle of finding qualified talent to perform the tasks of skilled and experienced machinists. Anytime processes can be simplifed or automated, this allows inexperienced machininsts to perform tasks accurately and on time, and also allows for skilled machinists’ talents to be used elsewhere, where their talents can be maximized. Automated gaging is a technology that can enable inexperieced machinists to easily perform measurement processes and keep your production workflow moving.
The Marposs Quick Set™ gage is an example of how automating processes helps shops maximize productivity. The typical measurement process can be a tedious task and can often lead to mistakes by inexperienced machinists. The Quick Set gage measures three ODs and the overall length of the shaft (or any part with multiple dimensions) and confirms whether or not the dimensions are accurate. Then, the gage shows a photo demonstration of the correct way to load the part into the gage to ensure an accurate reading. The data is then loaded into SPC software where it can be tracked and a trend analysis can be performed. The gathered data can also be used to auto comp the tool that is controling the particular dimension. By using the Quick Set for automated gaging, inexperienced machinists can easily perform measurements while minimizing chances for errors.
